Teenage years: the daily crossword in the Liverpool Echo (England), mostly easy cryptic. Why Betelgeuse? Can't think really, but I have always been fond of the faintly ridiculous ring to its name. It's great for train journeys - all you need are a few grids, sharpened pencils and your imagination. About 20 years ago I discovered compiling and found it more fun than solving. I started solving at about 16 years old - "helping" my mother and usually ending up with tables piled with books. My mother was the cryptic crossword enthusiast, who used to spend Saturday afternoons solving quite difficult cryptics (starting off with the Age Saturday, then English ones from the Guardian, or New Statesman) We even got the Listener for years, purely for the crossword. I studied literature and writing, then music and science for several years, and now back to words and writing gain. Everybody did it, including sisters, cousins and aunts, and when they weren't writing, they read, argued over words and played word games.

After Jeremy moved to Wollongong in 2008 there has been a weekly telephone conversation which keeps the friendship and cruciverbal partnership intact.īeing brought up in a large house crammed with books, I had this strange compulsion to write. Of course morning teas became longer and work output diminished!Īs Bob had been setting crosswords as Brother Naga (anagram of Robert Hagan) it was not too long before Barney Naga appeared. Over time Bob passed onto Jeremy "the knowledge" and the love of the challenge associated with cryptic crosswords. Bob was a fan of the cryptic crossword, having learnt a great deal from Noel Jessop and was a long standing member of the ACC. Morning tea inevitably involved an attack on the Sydney Morning Herald crossword. As he was looking for "outside interests" he enrolled in Jeremy's evening upholstery course and a friendship ensued.Īfter retirement, Bob would come to Jeremy's workshop several times a week to "lend a hand". The duo of Bob Hagan and Jeremy Barnes first met in Goulburn in 1993 when Bob was approaching retirement as a high school maths master.

I look forward to one day finding out what this 'spare time' is that people talk about. I've recently started learning to spin poi and so far I've acquired a few bruises but have only broken one pair of glasses by hitting myself in the face. At other moments you might find me reading, writing one of my blogs or playing table games. Lately I've also been spoiling our 2 young grandsons. When I'm not solving or setting I'm working in my long-time job in the public service to fund the next holiday.

We bounce ideas off each other and my setting skills have improved a lot.Īnn Ass combines my middle name (Ann) with an alternative meaning for my first (Jenny). When I teamed up with Ian Williams (as Hot and Cold) things started looking up. Actually, there was no 'somewhat' about it. As my solving improved I tried my hand at setting, somewhat unsuccessfully at first. I was introduced to ACC in the early '90s by the late Audrey Austin (Virgo) through Mensa. Since I'm a good girl and always do what I'm told I started solving and eventually we would race each other to complete them. I learnt to solve cryptics in the '80s when my boss introduced me to the daily newspaper puzzles and told me to have a go.
